Getting Around

This elevated monorail loops around the Central Business District. Trains usually run only in a counterclockwise direction, connecting most points of interest downtown. The People Mover is a very limited system, and it's often as fast to walk between two points on the circuit as it is to ride. Try to think of it more as a sightseeing attraction than a mode of transport; it does offer some nice views of the downtown area.

OLD SHILLELAGH
349 Monroe St.
Detroit, MI 48226
313-965-4600

Its Greektown location makes it convenient and its decidedly Irish character has kept it a treasured spot for over 20 years. Good solid tavern fare such as shepherd's pie, hearty burgers and daily specials nourish the body while live Irish entertainment feeds the soul. The bar is well stocked with all kinds of Irish goodies!

NEW HELLAS CAFE
Greektown
583 Monroe
Detroit, MI 48226-2932
313-961-5544

In Greektown, this place is "the one on the corner." All the requisites-lamb, saganaki, tasskebob, mousaka, grape leaves - are here, minus the ladle of grease that trouble so many neighborhood dishes. Probably the finest Greek restaurant in Greektown. Authentic food served in a comfortable atmosphere, and not expensive! It is a very popular restaurant, and one that I try to hit on every visit to the Motor City!

FISHBONE'S RHYTHM KITCHEN CAFE
400 Monroe St.
Detroit, MI 48226
313-965-4600

Greektown's only Cajun restaurant is nearly always crowded which tells you something about the food and atmosphere. Try the chicken and sausage sauce piquant and the whiskey ribs. If you're really hungry, start with the generous Percy's platter: tender smoked Cajun salmon, oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp and mussels.

LELLI'S INN
7618 Woodward Ave.
Detroit, MI 48202
Phone: 313/871-1590

This Italian eatery's immense menu would take a lifetime to thoroughly sample. Lelli's is home to the finest of veal, the thickest of minestrones and the most precise service. Tip: Save room for the house-made ice creams.
