>>COSMO'S NORTH AMERICAN DIARY - WEEK 2

DAY 8- Saturday, February 1, 2003

SHOW IN FT. MEYERS

I woke up at about 9 AM. I laid in my bunk for a few minutes and got up. It was a beautiful day. I had forgotten that the shuttle was coming in this morning, I was hoping to hear the signature double sonic boom, but I figured we were so far south that I wouldn't be able to hear it. I live near Kennedy Space Center and usually hear the sonic booms right before it lands. It has knocked me out of bed a couple of times! I go dressed and headed into the gig. I unconsciously scanned the sky for the shuttle. Surely, it had landed by now.

My cellphone rang, I looked at the caller ID, it was my neighbor, Pat. I figured she was calling to let me know if she was coming to the show tomorrow. I answered- she asked me if I was watching the news- my heart about dropped- all I could thing of was September 11th. I asked her what had happened- she said that the Space Shuttle blew up! It was weird- my mind could not comprehend what she was saying- I thought, the space shuttle blew up in 1986- what is she talking about? Plus it was scheduled to land today…she then went on to explain that it had blown up coming back to land. I told her I would call her back; I ran back to the bus, turned on the satellite and lo and behold…it was true. I was in shock. I had witnessed the Challenger explode in 1986- I could not believe that it was happening again. I sat in front of the TV in disbelief- I had actually watched the shuttle launch not two weeks ago from Titusville- I always drive to the coast to watch the launches. And here was the Columbia, breaking up over Texas. I was in shock. I remembered that I had taken some photos of the launch. I grabbed my camera and looked at the images- and wished I could go back to that moment, much as I wished I could go back to September 10th.

I went into the gig, no one had yet heard the news. What can you say? I told Robbie- he was shocked. The news quickly spread around the crew- everybody was in disbelief. Many questions- and no answers. We garnered as much news from the TV as we could, and went about our work, although numb. The show must go on…

Obviously, the Space Shuttle news hung over us all day, but we carried on with our jobs. Nothing really sticks out about this day besides the shuttle. I spoke to Cliff Williams, the bass player for AC/DC about coming to tonights' show, but he declined. We spoke for a while, it was good to speak to him. I also run lights for AC/DC and hadn't seen Cliff since the end of the last tour in July of 2001. He said that he may come up to Tampa tomorrow, as Brian Johnson was coming to that show as well.

I walked out to the bus at one point and on the marquee for the venue, they had put a message out- it said "God bless the families of the Columbia Astronauts." I was touched and thought it was a great sentiment from the arena. I looked up to the sky and wondered what had happened…

The bands arrived and they were all obviously upset by the tragic event of the day. I showed them my photos of the Columbia launch.

Before the Scorpions went on, I stopped by to see Klaus. He knows how much I am into aircraft and space travel. He asked me if he thought it would be a good idea for him to say something to the crowd about the Columbia disaster. I said, "Of course! Events like this bring people together, and when you become part of them, the audience, they feel together with you." Klaus' worry was that he didn't want to share his sympathies about the disaster and the say, "Let's rock!" So, he decided to say something before "Wind of Change" which I thought was a wonderful idea. Klaus is always so thoughtful and full of feeling. He loves his audience, he shares their happiness and their despair.

The shows went well, the audience obviously needed a diversion from the constant news of the day. They were all rocked and their thoughts were on something besides the Shuttle. David Coverdale came out and dedicated his show to the Shuttle Astronauts. Before "Wind of Change," Klaus said, "Our hearts go out to the families of the astronauts who died in this tragic event." The crowd cheered, feeling consoled, I think, not only by his words, but also by the fact the Scorpions, being a German band, shared the pain and anguish that all Americans were feeling this day.

Load out went on as usual. We left the building to get on the busses. I looked up into the stars and said a prayer for the 7 fallen heroes.

DAY 9 - Sunday, February 2, 2003

SHOW IN TAMPA

I slept well on the bus, it was a short ride up I-75. I rolled out of my bunk, dressed and made my way into familiar territory- I have been here many times, both on tour and as a visitor to other concerts. It used to be called the "Ice Palace," but was now called the "St. Pete Times Forum." It was still in Tampa, however. I am confused.

I strolled in and saw a few familiar faces on the local crew- namely Brenda, the Crew Steward. I said hello to a few friends, checked on my lighting crew and made my way to catering for coffee and breakfast.

I headed to the stage and did my focuses; it was still taking longer than I had hoped to get the rig up and trimmed. Finally, it was up, but it was already 2 PM. Load in would definitely have to pick up.

I made several calls to friends making sure if they were coming or not. My Guest List was up to 38 people! Many were confused as to where the "St. Pete Times Forum" was located. St. Pete? No, I explained. One of the girls from my local bar in Deltona, the Sandbar, called and said that her ride backed out on her and she wasn't coming. 3 tickets off the list. I spoke to Brian Johnson, he was definitely coming. I had spoken to Brian a few days earlier, and I expressed to him that the Scorpions wanted him to sing "Hurricane" with them on stage. Shortly after our conversation, I went to the band and expressed Brian's desire to sing "Hurricane" with them on stage. While I wasn't completely truthful, it still worked. Brian was going to hit the stage with the Scorpions tonight! I spoke to several other friends, they all were still coming. My neighbor Pat was coming, but she called and said that her ride decided not to go so she was stuck, and didn't want to drive all the way from Deltona by herself. I thought, hey, the bartender from the Sandbar, but she had already called work and said she was going in. So, Pat decided to drive down by herself. Another catastrophe averted. The biggest surprise was my brother Jeff, who hardly comes to my shows, called and asked if he could come to the show- I was overjoyed! Of course he could come. Finally, I had my Guest List finished, all tickets and passes sorted. I was relieved. I took a shower in the dressing room and went to focus my rig and do some programming.

Focus went quick, so I had time to spend programming the show. I got a lot done, in between phone calls about tickets. The show was looking great.

Doors opened at 6 PM, and I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Friends calling, my brother was lost, as was Pat. Otie, Henry and John were on their way. Brian Johnson and his entourage's arrival was imminent. Aree was nearly there.

My brother called and was at the box office. Problem was, I had his passes in my pocket and parking for him in the backstage compound. He had already paid and parked elsewhere. He got his car and met me in the back. Unbelievably, they refunded his money! Everybody else arrived with no further problems.

I went across the street to meet some friends at a bar called Newks. I go there everytime I am here, it's a pretty cool place. I slammed a beer with several friends, found my brother and headed back to the gig. I found Otis, my pyro guy, he had come over with his wife to see me, and so she could see the show. Also, the wife of the owner of the Sandabr showed up, with her stunning daughter Jessica, who is a bartender at the bar. She had this tiny little top and tight jeans on and all my lighting crew wanted to know who she was. I did NOT introduce them...

I had my spot meeting, then I managed to wolf down a few bites of dinner. I popped into David's dressing room to say hello, and then by the bands rooms to wish them a good show as well. I raced out to the lighting desk after Dokken was finished and got ready for my show amongst a plethora of friends. The house lights went out and Whitesnake was onstage.

Right before "Here I Go Again," David blurts out to the audience, "Light 'em up, Cosmo, let's see these people!" It was really great tonight with so many of my friends around. I felt like a celebrity. The show was great, the fans rocking. It wasn't near sold out, but the volume of the crowd made up for the lack of bodies.

Whitesnake finished and I ran back to see the Scorpions. They were excited about Brian Johnson coming. I made my way back to Front of House and visited with my friends. It was great to see some old faces, but once again, I was working and didn't have much time to visit. Again, the house lights went out and the Scorpions were burning up the stage. The show was great. After the second song or so, Brian turned up. During a lull in my show, I hugged him and said hello. He left right before the encore and headed back to the stage to join the Germans onstage.

The Scorpions came back . Klaus was wearing a Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey- the crowd went nuts again! They did Wind of Change and Still Loving you, and then introduced Brian- the crowd went more than crazy. Brian came out and they exploded into "Rock You Like a Hurricane." Brian was fantastic! The crowd was in a frenzy! Then, Brian and Klaus disappeared from the stage- and appeared on the floor of the arena- Klaus was on Brian's shoulders ala AC/DC! I was rolling on the floor laughing at this point- then they started coming farther into the audience! I thought, where is the security? They MUST not be prepared for this! Suddenly, they were as far as my mix position, almost to my console! The fans realized what was going on and I saw people running toward them. I wondered how the hell they would get back. Then, just as suddenly, they turned back for the stage. Security was around them and leading them back. After the show Klaus said to me, "I thought Brian was coming out to see YOU!" They climbed the stairs and both were back on stage, safe and sound. They finished Hurricane, the audience loved it. The band were all smiles, Brian included.

I packed up my gear and brought my guests backstage. I put them all in Whitesnake's dressing room, as the band were all gone; then I went to finish up my work. I always go see my crew after the show; I let them know how things went, good and bad, and I thank them all for the days work.

I found my brother and brought him to the Scorpions dressing room. It was heaving with people. A few of my friends had made their way into the dressing room, and I still had a few friends in the Whitesnake room. Eventually, a few of them left and the rest were in the Scorps room. It was simply packed. Brian was in there entertaining everybody. The entire night was gas. I was still running around with like a chicken with my head cut off.

My friends left one by one, I got to visit with them a little. I said goodbye to my brother and his girlfriend. Eventually, it was just me again.

I was beat, though and was looking forward to crawling into my bunk. We left and a few of us stayed up for a while, drinking beer and winding down from the long day. Long three days. I finally crawled into my bunk and passed out. It was after 4 AM.

DAY 10- Monday, February 3, 2003

DAY OFF IN PENSACOLA

I actually woke up at 8 AM. I have a little window in my bunk; I looked out, we were in a mall parking lot, seemingly driving in circles. We finally came to a stop. Out my window was a Firestone garage. I got out of my bunk, still tired. We were at a Fairfield Inn. In a mall parking lot. There was a Steak & Ale next to the hotel. I got dressed and went in to see if any rooms were ready- the only one available was a handicapped access room, but I didn't care- I was happy to get a room, and more happy that I didn't actually need a handicapped room.

I went back to the bus and dragged all my luggage into the room. I had planned on going to the Naval Aviation Museum today, but I was tired and the museum wasn't very close. I decided to stay in. I crawled back into bed and went back to sleep.

I woke up around 1 PM, and felt much better. I got out my computer and went on the Internet. I made a few calls and then took a shower.

I decided to go to the mall, but stopped at Steak & Ale first. Attaboy and a couple of the other crew were there at the bar. I told them I had to go to the mall first, but would return later. I left and walked over to the mall.

I walked the entire mall, but found nothing I needed. I bought some post cards. I left the mall and decided to have dinner at Steak & Ale. When I returned, the bar was empty. I asked for a table, was seated, ordered dinner and wine and had a nice relaxing meal by myself. I headed back to my room.

I was a bit disappointed the I didn't make it to the Naval Aviation Museum, but I have been there before, and I really needed to catch up on some rest. I was in bed again- it was only 10:30. Nice day off…

DAY 11- Tuesday, February 4, 2003

SHOW IN PENSACOLA

I had a great sleep. I got out of bed, showered, packed and started to head out when the bus drove away. I wanted to take the second bus call, but they didn't know I was supposed to be on it, so they left. I called Jessica and she sent the runner to pick me up.

I arrived at the gig about 15 minutes later and went straight to work. The rig was still taking too long to put up, but today seemed better than previous.

The Scorpions have been wanting to add some effect, namely a "flame" effect. However, as I have said previously, the cost is enormous. So, as an alternative, we have been looking into silk flame units. Not the small ones you have probably seen, but large flames, 8 or 10 feet high. I have had much difficulty finding anybody who makes these units; we did find a company in England, however, the time to ship and the inherent customs problems make it impossible to get those. We were looking into propane flame units, but, again, they are cost prohibitive for this tour. I will continue to search for the silk units.

Lowell, my dimmer guy, seems to be having a medical problem that won't go away. He thinks it may be an abscess on a tooth. He is in pain and his jaw is extremely swollen. He decided today that he may need to go home if it doesn't get any better.

After load in, I had lunch and went to focus. I got some programming time in. It was an uneventful day that went by quickly.

It was a beautiful sunset over the gulf. I had my spot meeting, ate dinner and suddenly it was show time. It was a good show, even though ticket sales were a bit lackluster.

We had a very long drive tonight to Bossier City, nearly 8 hours. We wouldn't load in until probably 10 AM, so it would be a hectic and fast-paced day.

I relaxed on the bus and crawled into my bunk.

DAY 12- Wednesday, February 5, 2003

SHOW IN BOSSIER CITY, LOUISIANA

The roads were horrible; that coupled with the fact that we were driving fast to get there made for a very uncomfortable sleep. We arrived around 10 AM and everybody raced to get the show up.

We are at the CenturyTel Center, a brand new arena. It is really nice. It's just a pity that we have no time to really enjoy it.

Another uneventful day that flew by because of the late load in. I wish I had more to write, but on days like this, especially early in the tour, there is nothing to do but get the show up, next thing you know, the doors are open and it's showtime.

Around dinner time, it dawned on me where we were- Louisiana! Cajun food! So I asked the runner if there was a Cajun restaurant around- yes, there was. So, I ordered a shrimp Po' Boy for later. Now, if that's the highlight of the day…

The show did go well, load out went okay and we had a day off tomorrow in Dallas. I have some good friends there, I was looking forward to seeing them and eating some good Tex-Mex.

DAY 13- Thursday, February 6, 2003

DAY OFF IN DALLAS

We arrived early in the morning. I got out of my bunk around 9, dressed, got my stuff together and checked into the hotel. We were staying at the Sheraton across the highway from the Dallas Market.

I got to my room, unpacked, set up my computer and caught up on some work. It seems that Mike Kinard had found some large silk flame units located in Washington state. I made several phone calls and found that they had a distributor in Austin. I called them, and they said they would bring a flame unit down to the venue. Hooray!

After I finished my work (there is never really a day off out here), I called Scotty and Chris, two of my best friends in the world. Scotty is a legend in the business, he has been doing lighting since the early eighties. Scotty and I used to work together many years ago and became fast friends. Everybody knows Scott Dopson! Scott was coming to pick me up after I finished my work.

Scotty arrived about 4 PM, I met him in the hotel bar shortly after and we headed to his house. We stopped at their tanning salon and tanned first, then made to Scotty and Chris' house about 5 PM. They have a beautiful house in Lewisville, about 35 miles north of Dallas.

After visiting for a while, we headed to my favorite Mexican restaurant in the world, Mercado Juarez. This place is an institution in Dallas, I have been going there since 1986. The food is phenomenal , but what I love the most is their salsa- it is a cooked salsa and served hot. It is simply scrumptious! I have tried for years to get the recipe, but they just laugh at me and mutter something in Spanish.

Mercado Juarez has one main location, but over the years, they have opened up other ones in different areas of Dallas, and have had mixed results. They have recently opened one up here in Lewisville, and Scotty & Chris claims that it is just as good.

I called Attaboy and invited him to go with us, so we stopped by the hotel and picked him up.

Well, it was just as good as the original. We had a great meal, many margaritas and too much food, as you do when you eat Mexican. After dinner, we went back to the hotel, stopped by the bar and I headed up to my room. It had been a perfect day- I got a lot of work done, ate some good food and spent time with great friends- what more could you ask for?

DAY 14- Friday, February 7, 2003

SHOW IN GRAND PRAIRIE (DALLAS)

I awoke at 8 AM, checked my emails, showered, packed and headed down to catch the bus. It was about a 20-minute ride to the gig, well out of Dallas seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Off the highway you could see the gig, a large metal shed-looking building, surrounded by nothing but fields.

I got off the bus, went inside and had a look. Load in was progressing well. This venue is excellent. Properly laid out, a large stage, many dressing rooms, a well equipped Production Office with High-speed Internet lines and great catering- what more could you ask for?

I had a quick breakfast and then joined my crew to do my usual load-in.

This venue is just great. Big Daddy, and old friend I used to work with when I was a lighting guy here in Dallas, is the house sound guy. It was great to see him. Scotty came down to visit around lunch time, as did his stepson, Ryan. They visited for a while and left shortly after lunch.

I focused the rig with Mike in record time - 18 minutes! Things were looking up, although Lowell was still having his teeth problems, and it looked like he was going to have to go home in the next day or two. I hated to have to change out a crew member, but it had to be done.

I spent the afternoon programming more show looks, I actually got a lot done today. I generally work on my show everyday, even if a tour is a year long- I try to make it better and better.

Tickets were selling really well here, we were over 7000 from what I was told. The house was full, a rowdy Texas crowd on a Friday night!

A very good friend of mine, Sonny, who does lights for Pantera and is currently on tour with Disturbed lives here in Dallas, unfortunately, however, he is on tour in Japan. His wife and a few of his friend were coming to the show, however, so I sorted them out with tickets and passes.

Scotty and Chris showed up right before showtime, we got to visit for a bit. The shows were all fantastic. Here is a photo of Whitesnake on stage. The crowd was loud and appreciative. I had a blast.

I visited with Scotty and Chris for a while after the show and then they headed out. Load out went fairly well, and we were on the bus on our way to San Antonio.

Ahead to Week 3 | Back to Week 1
